ARM 9 Instruction Set Architecture Introduction with Performance Perspective
نویسنده
چکیده
ARM-family processors are positioned among the leaders in key embedded applications. Many presentations and short lectures have already addressed the ARM’s applications and capabilities. In this introduction, we intend to discuss the ARM’s instruction set uniqueness from the performance prospective. This introduction is also trying to follow the approaches established by two outstanding textbooks of David Patterson and John Hennessey [PetHen00] [HenPet02].

AMULET3: a high-performance self-timed ARM microprocessor
AMULET3 is a fully asynchronous implementation of ARM architecture v4T and was designed at the University of Manchester between 1996 and 1998. It is the third generation asynchronous ARM, and is aimed at a significantly higher performance level than its predecessors. Achieving this higher performance has required significant enhancements to the internal micro-architecture, such as the introduct...
متن کاملInstruction Coalescing for 16-bit Code
In the embedded domain, memory usage and energy consumption are critical constraints. Embedded processors such as the ARM and MIPS provide a 16-bit instruction set (called Thumb in the case of the ARM cpu family) in addition to the 32-bit instruction set to address these concerns. Using 16-bit instructions one can achieve code size reduction and I-cache energy savings at the cost of performance...
متن کاملAutomatic C Compiler Generation from Architecture Description Language ISAC
This paper deals with retargetable compiler generation. After an introduction to applicationspecific instruction set processor design and a review of code generation in compiler backends, ISAC architecture description language is introduced. Automatic approach to instruction semantics extraction from ISAC models which result is usable for backend generation is presented. This approach was succe...
متن کاملHistorical Perspective and Further Reading
Th is section surveys the history of instruction set architectures over time, and we give a short history of programming languages and compilers. ISAs include accumulator architectures, general-purpose register architectures, stack architectures, and a brief history of ARM and the x86. We also review the controversial subjects of high-level-language computer architectures and reduced instructio...
متن کاملReXSim: A Retargetable Framework for Instruction-Set Architecture Simulation
Instruction-set simulators are an integral part of today’s processor and software design process. Due to increasing complexity of the architectures and time-to-market pressure, performance and retargetability are the most important features of an instruction-set simulator. Dynamic behavior of applications and processors requires the ISA simulators to be flexible. Flexible interpretive simulator...
